Write your Customers
Dear valued customer:
I am writing today to ask for your help. The New York State Legislature is considering a proposal that I believe is so misguided, on so many fronts, that I am hoping you will help me defeat it. I have valued our relationship over the years, and while I am hesitant to ask for your assistance, I do so because the threat to my business is real.
Governor Paterson wants to allow grocery stores, corner delis, gas stations – anyone who sells beer now – to also sell wine. This is a bad idea that was not very well thought out. Just look at the groups lining up against this idea:
- Newspaper editorials because it will cause many stores to close and lose jobs;
- Law enforcement agencies that fear an increase in underage drinking;
- Former officials of the State Liquor Authority who fear the agency ability to police rowdy bars and stop illegal alcohol sales will be overwhelmed by the dramatic increase in outlets selling wine;
- Small wineries from every region of the State who fear losing access to customers. This is ironic since we are told this will help wineries, but in fact they know only the most popular vineyards will get space on crowded supermarket shelves, leaving them out in the cold;
- Parent and student groups like Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and Parents Who Host, who also fear an increase in underage drinking
The Governor’s plan is designed to raise money. We understand the State’s need for more money given these tough times but this is a bad way to do it, and I don’t believe it will even raise the money the State hopes for given the impact it will have on stores and jobs across New York.
I am hoping you will write a letter or an email to your Assembly member of State Senator to let them know you oppose this plan. I am part of a coalition fighting this terrible idea. You can learn more by going to www.lastmainstreetstore.com, where you can find sample letters and emails to send to you State legislators. Please visit the site and take action.
Again, I know this is not the typical email you receive from us. I hope you understand why I decided to appeal for your help. I hope you can join the effort. Our business may depend on it.
Thank you,
